Neurodivergent Nutrition Needs

Child & Teen Neurodivergent Nutrition Support

Does your child have Autism, ADHD, sensory sensitivities, or another form of neurodivergence that makes eating feel more challenging?

Maybe mealtimes have become stressful, your child has a limited list of accepted foods, struggles to recognize hunger and fullness cues, forgets to eat, seeks certain foods, or becomes overwhelmed by new textures, smells, or flavors. You may have tried everything you can think of, only to feel frustrated that eating continues to be a daily challenge.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Neurodivergent children and teens often experience unique nutrition challenges that go far beyond "picky eating." Sensory processing differences, executive functioning challenges, routines, anxiety, interoception (recognizing hunger and fullness), medications, and co-occurring conditions can all influence eating patterns. These challenges are real, and they deserve an approach built on understanding—not pressure or judgment.

At Kendra's Kustom Nutrition, I believe nutrition support should honor your child's individual needs while helping them build confidence around food. My goal isn't to force new foods or eliminate safe foods. Instead, I work with families to create realistic strategies that improve nutrition while respecting sensory preferences, routines, and your child's pace.

This work is also deeply personal to me. As both a Registered Dietitian and the parent of a teenager with Autism and ADHD, I understand that every day can bring unique challenges. I know firsthand that what works for one child may not work for another, and that flexibility, patience, and individualized support make all the difference.

Together, we may work on:

  • Expanding food variety at your child's own pace
  • Supporting sensory sensitivities related to food textures, smells, temperatures, or appearance
  • Addressing selective eating and limited food repertoires
  • Meeting protein, fiber, vitamin, and mineral needs
  • Managing nutrition concerns related to ADHD medications or appetite changes
  • Supporting healthy growth and development
  • Creating predictable, lower-stress mealtime routines
  • Building independence with food choices and meal preparation as appropriate
  • Developing practical nutrition strategies for school, sports, travel, and daily life
  • Helping families reduce mealtime stress and power struggles

Because many neurodivergent children benefit from a team approach, I'm happy to collaborate with your child's pediatrician, therapist, occupational therapist, speech-language pathologist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or other healthcare providers to ensure nutrition recommendations complement their overall care plan.

I also recognize that every neurodivergent child is unique. There is no one-size-fits-all nutrition plan, and there is no expectation that your child should eat like everyone else. Together, we'll identify practical strategies that support both your child's nutritional needs and your family's daily routines, while celebrating progress—no matter how small.

Whether your child has Autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, or another form of neurodivergence, they deserve compassionate, individualized nutrition care that meets them where they are. Together, we'll build realistic nutrition strategies that support growth, health, confidence, and a more positive relationship with food for years to come.
