Pediatric High Cholesterol

Pediatric & Teen High Cholesterol

Has your child or teenager been diagnosed with high cholesterol, or were you surprised to hear their cholesterol levels were elevated?

Maybe the results came back after routine blood work, a sports physical, or because of a strong family history of high cholesterol or heart disease. You may be wondering how a child can have high cholesterol, whether medication will be necessary, or what changes your family should make at home.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know you're not alone.

High cholesterol isn't just an adult health concern. Some children develop elevated cholesterol because of genetics, while others may have contributing factors such as nutrition, physical inactivity, excess body weight, certain medical conditions, or medications. The good news is that healthy lifestyle habits established during childhood can have a lasting impact on heart health for years to come.

At Kendra's Kustom Nutrition, my goal isn't to place your child on a restrictive "low-fat" diet or eliminate all of their favorite foods. Children and teens still need healthy fats, calories, and nutrients to support normal growth and development. Instead, I focus on helping families make realistic, evidence-based nutrition changes that improve heart health while still allowing children to enjoy eating and participate fully in family meals.

Every child is different, which is why I take time to understand your child's medical history, family history, eating habits, growth pattern, activity level, and lifestyle before creating a personalized nutrition plan.

Together, we may work on:

  • Increasing heart-healthy fats while reducing unhealthy saturated and trans fats
  • Building balanced meals that support healthy cholesterol levels
  • Increasing fiber-rich foods that naturally support heart health
  • Finding practical ways to include more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds
  • Identifying eating habits that may be contributing to elevated cholesterol
  • Supporting healthy weight management when recommended by your child's healthcare provider
  • Encouraging sustainable physical activity habits
  • Creating realistic nutrition strategies the entire family can enjoy
  • Supporting lifelong heart health without unnecessary food restrictions

Because elevated cholesterol can sometimes have underlying medical or genetic causes, nutrition is only one piece of the overall picture. When appropriate, I'm happy to review laboratory results and collaborate with your child's pediatrician, pediatric cardiologist, endocrinologist, or other members of their healthcare team to ensure everyone is working toward the same health goals.

I also believe that children are most successful when healthy habits become family habits. Rather than asking one child to eat differently than everyone else, we'll work together to make practical changes that support the health of your entire household. Small, consistent improvements over time are often much more effective than strict diets or short-term changes.

Whether your child's high cholesterol is related to genetics, lifestyle, or another medical condition, they deserve compassionate, individualized nutrition care that supports both their heart health and normal growth. Together, we'll create a personalized plan that promotes healthy cholesterol levels, builds lifelong nutrition habits, and helps your child thrive now and into adulthood.
