Pediatric & Teen Obesity

Are you worried about your child's weight but unsure how to help without damaging their relationship with food or their self-esteem?

Maybe your child's pediatrician has expressed concerns about their growth chart or BMI, or you've noticed changes in their confidence, energy, or eating habits. Perhaps you've tried encouraging healthier choices, limiting certain foods, or increasing activity, only to find that it creates frustration, conflict, or guilt for everyone involved.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know you're not alone—and this is not a reflection of your parenting.

Childhood and teen obesity is complex. It is influenced by far more than simply eating too much or exercising too little. Genetics, hormones, medications, sleep, mental health, stress, neurodevelopmental conditions, family history, medical conditions, food access, and environment can all play a role. Every child has their own unique story, which is why there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

At Kendra's Kustom Nutrition, my goal isn't to put children on restrictive diets, count every calorie, or make them feel ashamed of their bodies. Instead, I focus on helping children and families build lifelong habits that support healthy growth, nutrition, confidence, and overall well-being. For many children, weight maintenance rather than weight loss is the healthiest goal, allowing them to naturally "grow into" their weight as they continue to get taller.

Every child is different. That's why I take time to understand your child's medical history, eating patterns, growth history, activity level, sleep habits, emotional well-being, family routines, and lifestyle before developing a personalized nutrition plan. Together, we'll focus on realistic, sustainable changes that your family can maintain long-term—not another short-term diet.

Together, we may work on:

  • Building balanced meals and snacks that support healthy growth and development
  • Increasing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and fiber in realistic ways
  • Helping your child recognize hunger and fullness cues
  • Reducing emotional eating and mindless snacking when appropriate
  • Creating healthier family mealtime routines
  • Supporting positive body image and self-confidence
  • Increasing physical activity in enjoyable, age-appropriate ways
  • Addressing barriers such as picky eating, sensory concerns, ADHD, autism, or other medical conditions
  • Establishing sustainable habits that promote lifelong health rather than temporary weight loss

Because childhood obesity is often influenced by more than nutrition alone, we'll also look at the bigger picture. Sleep, stress, medications, hormones, genetics, mental health, screen time, and underlying medical conditions can all impact weight and overall health. When appropriate, I'm happy to review laboratory results and collaborate with your child's pediatrician, endocrinologist, therapist, psychologist, or other members of their healthcare team to ensure everyone is working toward the same goals.

I also believe parents are one of the most important parts of a child's success. Rather than placing responsibility solely on your child, we'll focus on creating healthy habits for the entire family. Small, consistent changes in the home environment often have a much greater impact than strict diets or unrealistic expectations.

My goal is to help children develop a healthy relationship with food—not fear it. I believe nutrition counseling should build confidence, encourage curiosity around food, and support healthy behaviors without shame, guilt, or labeling foods as "good" or "bad."

Whether your family is looking to prevent future health concerns, improve eating habits, or support your child's long-term health, they deserve compassionate, individualized care that looks beyond the number on the scale. Together, we'll create a personalized plan that supports healthy growth, builds lifelong habits, and helps your child thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.
